Radiator cleaning

Why does a radiator need a clean out?

Have you noticed some unusual symptoms with your car’s cooling system? Things like engine overheating, poor internal heating and radiator leakages?

The potential culprit is a blocked or clogged radiator, usually caused by old or contaminated fluid in the system which can obstruct flow through the radiator fins and tubes.

This can lead to decreased performance and potential failure of other cooling system components. The good news is you have a few options to get things running smoothly again.

Natrad technicians are qualified experts in cooling and can provide quality advice for your auto cooling needs. We supply and service all kinds of radiators, keeping you on the road.

Where to start?

First of all, the use of terminology should be cleared up here. A radiator clean out refers to a process in which the radiator needs to be removed from the engine bay. The inlet tank is disassembled from the radiator core and then each individual tube is cleared of blockages to ensure optimal performance.

Some may confuse this with a radiator flush or cooling system flush. A radiator flush is a chemical treatment that is added to the cooling system, which will help remove scale and build-up of debris. A power flush is then performed to expel the build-up from the system. A new coolant solution can be added after this process is completed and will assist in returning optimum performance to the system.

Parts

Determining whether your radiator is viable for a “clean out” is the next step. Plastic aluminium radiators are not ideal as they aren’t easy to disassemble for this process.

If you have an older vehicle with a copper brass radiator, these are easy to disassemble. If this is you, then a radiator clean could be a good option, followed by flush of the system which will ensure the radiator continues working properly.

In the instance that there are any failed components in the system, a flush will need to be performed anyway before any replacements.

However,  if you have a full alloy or plastic aluminium radiator, you may be better off with a re-core or replacement. Natrad offers high quality re-core services as well as a wide range of radiator replacements that may suit your vehicle.
