- What happens if a drive belt breaks?
Your drive belt (also known as an alternator belt, fan belt, or accessory drive belt) is one of the most crucial elements in your engine. It powers the AC, the power steering system, the cooling system and the car’s electrical system.
If it breaks, or becomes contaminated or wears out, your car’s engine can be significantly damaged. It may lead to a sudden loss of power to the steering system, and cause the engine to overheat.
If you hear a rattling sound or elements within your car’s engine, like the AC or radio, stop working, get a specialist to check your drive belt straight away.
- When does my car's serpentine drive belt need replacing?
The drive belt can wear, crack, fray or disintegrate as it ages. You may experience slipping or squealing that indicates the belt isn’t running smoothly. The serpentine belt also needs to be replaced if it becomes contaminated by fluid or it becomes misaligned. The ‘check engine’ light may come on, or you may experience performance loss.
A Natrad technician can check and tighten your drive belt or provide a serpentine belt replacement if required.
- How often should my car's belt drive be inspected?
It’s a good idea to have your car’s belt drive inspected annually. Ask your Natrad technician to check the drive belt of your vehicle when you have your annual cooling system inspection done right before summer.
- Does Natrad install belts that meet my vehicle's specifications?
Yes, we do. Natrad installs belts from Optibelt that meet your vehicle’s specifications. These belts meet the same standards as original equipment quality or better. These durable belts will provide your car with a quiet, cost-effective, and long-lasting drive solution.
- Can I perform a serpentine belt replacement myself?
If you have mechanical experience, you can replace the serpentine or fan belt yourself. This job is relatively easy to perform on old vehicles. It can be a little more complicated to carry out on modern or front-wheel drive vehicles due to the placement of the engine and tight working space.
If you aren’t sure, have a Natrad specialist technician replace the belt for you. You can rest assured the serpentine belt will be correctly installed and tensioned.
