Glow plugs are a heating device used in diesel engines. They are essential for ignition in the engine, especially in cold conditions when the glow plug provides the heat needed for combustion. Glow plugs are located either in the combustion chamber or the pre-chamber, depending on the type of diesel engine.
If there is a problem with your glow plugs, your engine may not start or run smoothly. Glow plugs typically last for a long time, but if you're having issues with the way your diesel engine is starting or running, this could indicate an issue with your glow plugs.
At Natrad, we stock a huge range of glow plugs to suit all kinds of diesel vehicles. Our technicians can help you diagnose a problem with your vehicle's ignition, and we can supply and install the best solution.

If your diesel engine has started struggling when you start it, that could mean there’s a problem with one or more of your glow plugs. If only one or two glow plugs have failed, you will probably still be able to start the engine, but it will likely struggle a bit more.
Glow plugs typically last a very long time, around 160,000 kilometres. There are some factors which could cause your glow plugs to fail more quickly such as your engine overheating, using the wrong type of glow plugs, or the engine operating at a voltage that’s too high.
The right type of glow plugs for your vehicle will depend on the type of engine. You can check your owner’s manual for more information or ask your local Natrad technician for advice.
No. Glow plugs are included (or excluded) based on the OEM’s needs. Older diesel truck engines may not include glow plugs, which act as a form of preheating. However, modern vehicles feature an electric start with inbuilt glow plugs.
Most glow plugs will last around 1,609 kilometres in a diesel engine. However, they can either fail before then due to damage or defects, or last longer. But, without glow plugs, your engine will not start properly, so it’s best to ensure yours are up to scratch.
