It’s important that the car battery is replaced when indicated, as the electrolyte levels in an end-of-life battery may be below the plates, which under certain conditions can cause damage to the battery and the vehicle.

Ensure the battery top is clean, dry and free of dirt and grime. Inspect terminals, screws, clamps and cables for corrosion. If the battery is used seasonally, charge it fully before storing. Many batteries have a ‘state of charge’ indicator on the top of the battery that gives you an idea of the battery’s condition.

Car batteries can fail from wear and tear. Over time, the metal grids can corrode and the active material is lost. High temperatures accelerate this process. Discharging the battery by leaving lights or other accessories on for extended periods also accelerates battery failure. Under-charging can occur with stop-start driving or short journeys.
